In August we went to the USA to see relatives in the north of New York state. I’m not a city-break person but who could pass up the opportunity to see New York City just one time? We do like to tick boxes on our family trips and now I can say we have done the Big Apple. It’s quite difficult to plan a good trip to NYC when I have never held any ambitions to see it. #20 in the Judging a Photograph Series . Professional interiors photographers often don’t get the credit they deserve. After all, a successful interiors image looks serene, even toned and un-dramatic. The skill that goes into making shot like this is not obvious. If I’m going to have a day at the beach with my family then I am not going to take my big camera. There’s enough other things to carry like the beach shelter, the body boards, the towels, the flip flops, the picnic, the kite, the sunglasses, the hats, the sun lotion, the buckets, the spades and lots more. I know what you’re thinking – we have forgotten the barbeque! I don’t want…

They look good in large displays or in extreme close-up. This makes them an easy subject to approach. Despite this, I do take a lot of bad photos of flowers before I get it right, especially close-up and macro images. The tricky things about taking close-ups of photos of flowers are (1) getting the depth of field on the flower right, (2) getting the background right and (3) getting…
