I’ve been going back through our holiday photos from last summer when we visited New York. Our hotel was a short distance from Times Square and we walked through it a few times. Of course I took lots of photos but it’s very busy and crowded. I was trying to shoot cityscapes and get in the huge skyscrapers and bright lights. I wasn’t interested in the people at the time.
“Celebrity” Photobombs
It wasn’t until I sat down to properly edit my photos ready for printing that I noticed a whole lot of other goings-on in my New York photos. There are so many interesting people of Times Square whom I hadn’t noticed before!
At the time I wasn’t being very observant. I only saw the Donald Trump impersonator when I was right next to him, and didn’t realize he had photobombed this shot below. You may have heard of “The Naked Cowboy” (he isn’t naked – phew) who poses with tourists for photos in Times Square. He is just in this photo in a hat, with his back to the camera to the right of Trump.
The shot that needed labelling
The next photo I have included in a previous blog post, but I’d cropped it square, mainly to exclude the yawning man on the right in the blue shirt. Looking at it again I spotted a bunch of cartoon characters.
More Almost Naked People of Times Square
The third photo has the most unexpected discovery as I have finally noticed the almost naked woman on the right. She seems to be wearing nothing but a thong and “NY” painted on her backside. I googled “almost naked people of Times Square” (purely for research purposes I assure you) and found this NY Daily News article. From reading this, I assume that the lady in my photo has got painted boobs. That means she is not in fact, quite as topless as she looks from behind. Body paint doesn’t entirely count as clothes to my mind, but this mystery is solved.
Upstaged by the Caped Crusader
Last but not least, we got photobombed by Batman himself. I was doing my best to take a photo of the rest of the family in Times Square. Quite a few kind people had stopped in their tracks to let me take the snap. Batman just walked right in, without the slightest scruple. If we had asked to pose with him we would have been many dollars lighter, but he just leaped in of his own accord! All these pictures were shot in RAW on my trusty Sony compact.
I’m going to print my photos soon. Please consider using my affiliate link for Printerpix when you next get prints, photobooks, canvases, calendars or other photo gifts.
If you want your photo taken with a character then Times Square has lots of choice. Many tourists really do seem to get some fun out of this. Who would you pick to be in your souvenir photo?
There’s more to New York than just the Big Apple – drive upstate to see the stunning Watkins Glen waterfall walk.

I’d love to visit Times Square, there seem so much live and characters there
Thank you for linking up to #MySundayPhoto
It’s usually much more crowded – we struck it lucky.
Times Square is just one of those places isn’t it? What a great set of pics, you have captured it really well! 😀 #sundayphoto
Thanks – it’s a bit crazy!
Brilliant! It can be annoying noticing things in photos that weren’t supposed to be there…. or fascinating in this case! I love the vibrant colours in the photos. I’ve never been to New York but would LOVE to go! x #mysundayphoto
It certainly is a vibrant and colourful place. Too much for me to take in in one glance! I hope make it there one day.
Haha these are great, it’s funny how you don’t always spot things when you are taking the photograph. I guess at the time you are so focussed on what it is that you are trying to capture, when it’s busy you don’t really notice everyone and everything. Seems to be a lot of naked people around Times Square! #MySundayPhoto
That’s exactly it! Just thinking about what I want to frame at the time. Now I’m thinking about printing I see more in the image.
