1. Wigwam Holidays, Evenlode

Interviews with the people behind three family travel destinations. Insights of how each family travel destination is run and their commitment to customers. Family Travel Destinations, our top picks interviewed on Falcondale Life blog. Image description: Wigwam camping pod at Evenlode“Howard and Amanda Woolliams, we are here at Evenlode Grounds, a family run farm in the heart of the Cotswolds.”

Why did you start your travel/tourism business?

“We started our glamping business with Wigwam Holidays a little over a year ago following the sale of our dairy herd. We live in such a beautiful area and feel happy that we can share a small piece of this with other people.”

What sort of people or groups visit your family travel destination?

“People visit us from all over the UK. However, we are blessed geographically, being in the centre of the country.”

What do customers say to you?

“Guests love the open space of the site, the safety for children and above all the peace and quiet. They also love to visit all the quintessential English villages that are dotted around the area.”

What is your personal favourite thing to do/see at your site?

“I love to wander down to the site on a Saturday evening, see everyone with their fire pits and bbqs lit, cooking their supper and the children running around free and climbing the huge logs. I also love it when the whole site has been taken by one group of people and they are sitting chatting and laughing around the large communal fire, enjoying a few drinks. Everyone always seems content and happy!”

2. Votre Vacances, Chateau la Foret, France

Family Travel Destinations, our top picks interviewed on Falcondale Life blog. Image description: The courtyard at Chateau la Foret“I’m Sarah, I started Votre Vacances 3 years ago to give others the opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime, away from the stresses of ‘everyday’ life. This year my parents, Phillipa and Steve will be taking over the on-site mantle.”

Why did you start your travel/tourism business?

“We always went to France for our summer holidays, and I thought the young British staff that worked on these camping resorts were the coolest (& most tanned!) people, and I wanted to be one! 10 years later after working as a manager I decided I could set up on my own, and really provide a memorable experience for my guests.”

What sort of people or groups visit your family travel destination?

“In July and August the majority of our customers are families with children of all ages, as well as extended family groups who can stay close together on our site. In May and June we get a lot of retired couples who enjoy the Vendee out of season, as well as cycling groups. The majority of our customers come from the UK and Ireland.”

What do customers say to you?

“Customers love the authenticity of the site, mixing old with new. All the facilities are located in the original courtyard buildings. They also LOVE the freedom the children have, knowing it’s safe for them to go off to the park or farm by themselves, and meet new friends at the Children’s Club and swimming pools. They also like that our accommodation is clean, modern and well equipped.”

What is your personal favourite thing to do/see at your site?

“My favourite thing is to head to the courtyard bar and sit outside. The atmosphere as the sun sets and the stars start to come out is magical; especially when they have live bands playing and everyone is singing along, truly embodying the joie de vivre!”

3. Le Puy du Fou – Theme Park

Tell me about the origin of your travel/tourism business.

“Created in 1978, Puy du Fou is totally unique. Today it is the second largest theme park in France, with 2,260,000 visitors in 2017. The association organises the “Cinéscénie” show with 4,000 volunteers. The Grand Parc has 60 daytime and evening shows, 4 period villages, 27 restaurants and 5 themed hotels with 2,000 employees.”

What sort of people or groups visit your family travel destination?

“Each year we welcome more than 2 million visitors, 85% are French. Our theme park attracts visitors of all ages. Thanks to our 5 international awards in 5 years, the number of foreign visitors is advancing significantly (the UK / Spain / the Benelux countries / even the USA and China).”

What do customers say to you?

“We are really proud and honoured to register a 92% satisfaction rate and a revisit rate at 65%, which may show that the concept is really appreciated.”

What is your personal favourite thing to do/see at your site?

“It’s too complicated to choose! I always like attending our main shows, to be impressed by all the special effects. But I also really appreciate the immersive activities and to speak with the craftsmen in the period villages.”
